Thumb Implant (TOUCH®)

A solution to great long-term mobility.

See if the TOUCH® Implant is the Best Option for You

If you experience persistent pain, swelling, stiffness or weakness at the base of your thumb, you may have arthritis or degeneration of the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint.

When non-surgical treatments (splints, anti-inflammatories, injections, physical therapy) fail to provide adequate relief or if the joint damage is advanced, surgical intervention such as the TOUCH® implant may be the solution to restoring your mobility.

This newer-generation thumb arthritis surgery is widely considered a less invasive, yet functional alternative to traditional implant options or older tendon-graft procedures.

What is the TOUCH® Implant Procedure?

The TOUCH® procedure is a form of thumb joint replacement (CMC arthroplasty) using a specialized implant — rather than simply removing the arthritic bone or using tendon-graft techniques. This implant is engineered to mimic the natural biomechanics of the thumb’s CMC joint, maintaining proper alignment, preserving thumb length, and enabling stable, smooth motion, which sets it apart from other common hand arthritis treatments.

During surgery, the damaged joint surfaces are removed and replaced with an artificial prosthetic, typically a metal or other biocompatible implant designed to replicate normal thumb joint motion.

What Are the Benefits of the TOUCH® Implant Procedure?

The TOUCH® thumb implant offers patients long-term pain relief and a meaningful improvement in thumb function, helping restore strength for gripping, pinching, and everyday activities affected by CMC arthritis.

Because the implant preserves the natural length and alignment of the thumb, patients avoid the shortened appearance that can occur with some traditional procedures, leading to a more natural feel and motion. Many individuals also experience a smoother and more predictable recovery, with the potential for a quicker return to normal function compared to older or more invasive surgical techniques.

Is the TOUCH® Implant Right for You?

The TOUCH® implant is best considered when:

  • You have moderate to severe arthritis in the thumb CMC joint that limits your ability to do everyday tasks (grip, pinch, rotate, etc.) despite non-surgical treatments.
  • You value preservation of thumb length and near-normal appearance and function.
  • You desire a solution that offers good long-term mobility.

In consultation with Dr. Michael C. Nicoson at Hand + Wrist of Louisville, you’ll receive a personalized evaluation to see if the TOUCH® implant is the best option for your needs.
